2016 Camp ReportMondayFirst day of camp! Today campers learned the meaning of STEM as well as how scientists find answers in science, by asking questions! Campers collected bacteria from around the school and will be observing its growth over the next few days to help answer our question: What surface has the most bacteria? The main experiment of the day was designing, building and evaluating our water rockets; tomorrow we will conduct launch two after refining the rocket designs. Awesome first day of camp!
How do Rockets Work?TuesdayOur second day of camp began with a second round of rocket launching after making improvements yesterday afternoon. We continued our learning of flight by building paper airplanes and competing in distance and obstacle course challenges. Our main experiment of the day focused on tension used in catapults to launch objects at targets of different distances; the Lego minifigures didn't stand a chance against our catapults!

ThursdayWe have become expert roller coaster builders! Today's morning we refined our coasters for the afternoon competition that featured lots of loops, jumps, tunnels and even corkscrews! The creativity and revision of engineering design after trials was exciting to witness. Today also worked in some outside games including a cookie challenge, water ballon catapult and I spy challenge.
FridayToday we wrapped our awesome week of camp with some last observations, experiments, and games. The day began with final observations of our bacteria plates; it was amazing how much gross bacteria grew in just few days! Our warm-up today focused on coral and we continued our learning of ocean ecosystems and animals including Mr. Rott sharing pictures of his recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. Today's experiment was all about gravity, specifically how to slow it down and save eggs: Egg Drop Challenge! We tried two different trials at different heights and had great success at 7 ft, but it got a lot harder at 15 ft! We spent the afternoon outside enjoying games and popsicles outside.
Mr. King & Mr. Rott had an awesome week getting to know and working with all of the campers and look forward to lots more fun next summer with Einstein STEM Camp! |
